What is a lip flip?

A lip flip is a long-established technique that has drawn renewed attention in recent years through new clinical work.

It works on the principle of lifting the lip by weakening the muscles that pull it downwards, using botulinum toxin (BoNT). As those muscles relax, the upper lip turns upwards and becomes more visible from the front. Because a neurotoxin is used rather than a filler, no volume is added to the lip; the result is achieved through superficial injections at four points around the lip.

How much does a lip flip cost in Istanbul?

The exact figure depends on the neurotoxin used and the number of units required, and is confirmed at consultation. The reason it sits well below the cost of lip filler is straightforward: no filler product is used, and the amount of toxin needed is very small.

That low cost matters more than it first appears. Because the effect lasts around three months rather than a year, what counts is not the price of a single session but how easily the result can be maintained — and at this level, maintenance is far more manageable than a filler programme. It is also an inexpensive way to find out whether you want your lips changed at all, before committing to anything longer-lasting.

Its relationship with lip filler

Because a lip flip adds no volume, it can be used on its own in people who already have adequate lip volume and who do not want the fuller, augmented look that filler produces.

It can also be used alongside lip filler for patients who want to refine a result they already have. Used this way the two are not alternatives but complements: filler provides volume, the lip flip adjusts how the lip sits.

Why is it more comfortable to have done?

Finer needles are used, which makes the treatment noticeably more comfortable than lip filler. There are fewer injection points, and the injection is placed within the skin — so unlike filler, the procedure is easier and essentially painless.

The effect appears gradually. No swelling, reaction or bruising is expected afterwards, which means returning to social activity straight after the appointment is not a problem.

When does it start working, and how long does it last?

The effect emerges gradually from the third or fourth day and settles fully within ten days, so the result should be judged at the end of the first ten days rather than earlier.

It then lasts around three months. The relatively short duration compared with neurotoxin treatments elsewhere on the face comes down to the very small amount of toxin used. Set against that, the low cost and the ease of the procedure make a lip flip considerably easier to maintain than a course of lip filler.

Safety and possible side effects

Granuloma formation and vascular events — which, though very rare, can occur with lip filler — are not a possibility here, because no filler material is introduced into the tissue. The safety margin is correspondingly high.

Some patients experience temporary weakness in lip movement. This is dose-related and resolves on its own as the effect of the toxin recedes.

What else it achieves

During the same treatment, the fine vertical lines around the mouth — known as smoker lines — also soften noticeably.

The corner of the mouth can be lifted at the same time, producing a more rested appearance. A downturned mouth corner gives the face a tired expression, so correcting it contributes beyond the lip itself.

Who is it suitable for?

A lip flip suits people who want their lips to look better and to come forward a little, but who do not want an obviously augmented appearance.

Having a lip flip in Istanbul

My practice is in Levent, on the European side of Istanbul. I see patients travelling from Germany, the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, and there are a few practical points worth knowing.

• No recovery time. The injection takes five to ten minutes and you can continue your day immediately, so it fits easily into a short stay.
• Plan around the onset. The effect appears from day three or four and settles by day ten. If you are travelling for an event, allow at least two weeks.
• Follow-up does not require a second flight. The review can be done remotely with photographs and a short video of the lip in motion.
• Assess before you travel. Suitability depends on how your lip moves, not on how it looks in a still photograph. An online consultation beforehand avoids arriving for a treatment that turns out not to be the right one.
