Lip Filling | Op. Dr. Gökhan Beyhan — Etiler/Levent, İstanbul

Natural look targeted lip filler application with recycled hyaluronic acid.

The lips are in the center of the face and are one of the areas that attract attention at first glance. Complaints such as loss of volume, asymmetry, unclear contour or proportional imbalance can directly affect self-esteem. Lip filler is a safe medical aesthetic application that improves the volume, shape and contour of the lip with hyaluronic acid-based products — and can be completely undone if necessary.

What Do We Do With Lip Filler?

Every patient comes with a different expectation. Some want fuller lips, while others simply demand clarification of the contour, others - correction of asymmetry. Although lip filler may seem like a single process, it can actually serve different purposes from each other:

  • Increase volume — Plumping thin lips, increasing the volume of lip red (vermilion)
  • Contour identification — Clarification of the lip border (vermilion border), clarification of cupid arc
  • Correction of asymmetry — Balancing the ratio of upper to lower lip, elimination of right-left differences
  • Edge shaping — Lifting the corners of the lips up, correcting the corners falling down
  • Moisture and tissue improvement — Moisture and softness to dry, thin and striped lips

We talk together during the inspection which goals or objectives apply to you. The main thing is: a good lip filler looks natural. We do not aim to say “I have fillers”, but to say “the lips are very beautiful”.

Why is Hyaluronic Acid Preferred?

All products that I use in lip fillers are based on hyaluronic acid (HA). There are several important reasons for this:

Naturalness: HA is already a molecule found naturally in the body. It retains moisture on the skin and lips, providing a soft, supple texture. When applied as a filler, this natural feeling is also preserved — the lips do not look hard or plastic.

Recyclability: This is the most important safety criterion for me. HA-based fillers can be completely dissolved if needed with the enzyme hyaluronidase. It can be withdrawn if he is not satisfied with the result or if any complications develop. Permanent fillings do not have this option.

Predictability: We can predict the behavior of HA fillings, how much volume they will give and how long they will remain. This is also a great advantage in terms of planning and natural result.

Lip Filler Techniques

The choice of technique depends on the existing structure of the lip and the desired result. Two approaches that I practice most often in my clinic:

French Type Lip Filler

It is the classic approach. The filler is evenly distributed over the entire lip. The goal is a general increase in volume and a soft, rounded fullness. The lip contour is preserved, a natural transition is ensured. Especially in patients who want lips that are naturally proportioned but a little fuller.

Russian Type Lip Filler

It is a newer and popular technique. The filler is injected in the form of vertical columns. Instead of protruding forward, the lip rises upwards; the midline becomes prominent and a characteristic “heart shape” is formed. The lip line acquires a sharper, more defined and more feminine look. I prefer it especially in patients who want a pronounced lip line with a thin and flat lip structure.

I can apply both techniques in their pure form or in combination. In some patients, a hybrid approach to the lower lip, such as the French type, and the Russian type to the upper lip, can give the most natural result.

What Products Do I Use?

In the selection of lip filler products, I observe two basic criteria: softness and security.

Lip tissue is one of the most mobile areas of the face — it is constantly in motion, such as talking, smiling, eating. Therefore, the filler placed on the lip should be elastic and soft. Hard or high-viscosity products (those that are suitable for the chin line) create an unnatural feeling and appearance on the lip.

In my clinic, I use HA fillers that are FDA and/or CE approved, specially formulated for lip application. Most of the products contain integrated lidocaine, which increases comfort during the procedure.

The brand and quantity of the product to be used (usually between 0.5—1 ml) are decided together during the examination according to your lip structure and target.

How is the transaction carried out?

Before the procedure, a topical anesthetic cream is applied to the lip area and waited about 15—20 minutes. During this time, I evaluate your lip structure and draw the injection plan.

The injection is done with a thin needle or cannula with a blunt tip. According to the technique and the choice of products, the filler is placed; during application, I constantly check the symmetry. Total processing time 15—20 minutes.

During the procedure, there may be a slight pressure or stinging sensation, but discomfort is minimal thanks to topical anesthesia and lidocaine in the product. The vast majority of my patients say they find the procedure much more comfortable than they expected.

Post Process

After the lip filler:

  • The first few hours: Slight swelling and a feeling of numbness are normal
  • The first 24 hours: Avoid hot drinks, excessive facial movements and pressure on the lip. Do not use lipstick or lip liner. Light ice application helps control edema
  • 2—3 days: Swelling and possible bruising recede greatly
  • 7—10 days: The final result is revealed — the filler sits, the swelling goes down completely, the lip regains its natural softness

Most patients can return to their social life the next day. It usually takes 2—3 days for the pronounced swelling to pass.

permanence

The persistence of lip filler depends on the metabolism of the person and the product used 9—12 months varies between. Since the lip area is one of the most mobile areas of the face, the filler is absorbed here a little faster than in other areas.

After the first application, I conduct a control evaluation within 4—6 weeks. If necessary, we can optimize the result with a small touch up (0.1—0.2 ml). Maintenance sessions are usually scheduled with an interval of 9—12 months.

Who Can't Apply Lip Filler to?

  • Patients during pregnancy and lactation
  • Those who have active herpes (herpes) in the lip area (can be applied after recovery due to the risk of exacerbation)
  • Those with known allergies to HA or filler ingredients
  • Those with active infection or inflammation at the injection site

Initiation of prophylactic antiviral therapy before the procedure may be evaluated in patients with a history of herpes.

The Next Step

It is most accurate that we evaluate the most suitable technique, product and quantity for your lips face to face. The preliminary interview is free of charge.
